No official release date has been announced yet, but fans of the series can watch Seasons 1-3, plus the ‘Mugen Train’ and ‘Hashira Training Arc’ movies, streaming on Crunchyroll.

Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” — starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe — will open the upcoming Venice Film Festival.
Burton’s follow-up to his 1988 comedy-horror classic, in which Keaton returns as the foul-mouthed, shape-shifting ghoul, will world premiere out-of-competition on Aug. 28 at the Lido’s Palazzo del Cinema with talent in tow. The hotly anticipated new “Beetlejuice” chapter releases in the U.S. on Sept. 6 via Warner Bros. and will launch internationally starting Sept. 4.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” sees three generations of the Deetz clan move back into their Winter River home after a sudden death in the family. When Lydia’s (Ryder) rebellious teen daughter Astrid (Ortega) discovers a portal to the afterlife hidden in the basement, the name of the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice is inevitably repeated three times, inviting him to wreak havoc in the Deetz family home once again.

Daniel Brühl is getting back behind the camera to direct “Break,” a biopic about the tennis champion Gottfried von Cramm whose rise to stardom in the 1930s saw him face off with the Nazi regime in his native Germany.
“All Quiet on the Western” front star Felix Kammerer will lead the feature, which reunites the actor, Bruhl and the team behind the Oscar-winning WWI drama. “Break” is based on a screenplay by Hossein Amini from Marshall Jon Fisher’s “A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played.”
The Ink Factory (“The Pigeon Tunnel,” “The Night Manager”) and their partners Marc Platt and Adam Siegel for Marc Platt Productions are teaming with Malte Grunert for Amusement Park (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) for Nine Hours on the picture, which will be told in German and English.

Danny and Michael Philippou, directors of last year’s breakout horror hit “Talk to Me,” have set up their second feature film “Bring Her Back” in their Adelaide, Australia, hometown.
The film has attracted financial support from the South Australia Film Corporation and is expected to start production “in summer.” The producers are Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton of Causeway Films and the finished film will be distributed worldwide by A24.
“We love that we get to be in Adelaide to make our next film, we feel so at home here – it’s where we feel most comfortable and inspired, and we want to be making movies here for a long time,” said the twin brothers in a prepared statement. “Talk to Me” was filmed in Adelaide with funding from both the Safc and the Adelaide Film Festival.

Hackman’s surveillance expert Harry Caul is inexpressibly sad and lonely – a classic and poignant American everyman
God’s surveillance is everywhere: this is the thought that weighs heavily on bugging expert and practising Catholic Harry Caul in Francis Ford Coppola’s eerie 1974 classic, now on rerelease. It was a movie that intuited Watergate-era paranoia and disillusion: at the nadir of his despair, Harry ends up smashing a figure of the Blessed Virgin in his apartment because he suspects it contains a listening device. The Conversation contains an unforgettable performance from Gene Hackman as Caul: in his glasses and moustache, drab suit, white shirt and tie with clear plastic mac worn indoors, it is a classic and poignant “American everyman” portrayal, to put alongside Ernest Borgnine in Delbert Mann’s Marty from 1955 or Paul Walter Hauser in Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell from 2019. He probably inspired Ulrich Mühe’s East...

Principal photography has commenced on the Arab underworld thriller “Boomah” (“The Owl”), written and directed by Zaid Abu Hamdan and marking the Jordanian filmmaker’s second feature following his critically acclaimed “Daughters of Abdul Rahman.”
Previously announced in December, Rakeen Saad is set to play the titular role of the female thug Boomah. Saad rose to acclaim for her central roles in hit shows “The Giza Killer” and the Netflix original “Al Rawabi School for Girls,” and will next be seen as the lead in a new Netflix series production “Echoes of the Past” and “The Way of the Wind,” the biblical drama by Terrence Malick.

Isabelle Huppert has started filming in France as a fictionalised version of billionaire Liliane Bettencourt, the heir to the L’Oreal fortune, on La Femme la Plus Riche du Monde which Playtime has boarded for sales.
Directed by Thierry Klifa, the film is loosely inspired by nonagenarian Bettencourt, who became the subject of a social, financial and political scandal when she gave hundreds of millions of Euros to a young artist which led her daughter to launch an investigation that uncovered political corruption allegations extending to former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

The Czech Republic’s Audiovisual Producers´ Association (APA) has called for the country’s audiovisual incentive to be increased to 25%, arguing its current 20% offer is not competitive enough for attracting enough international roductions.
The country’s audiovisual industry had a turnover of £450m in 2023, according to APA figures, down 12% on the record year of 2022. The APA said the main reason for the drop is a decline in international production whose revenues fell 18% to £310m

This tasty piece of action cinema provides crunches, squelches and and spatter effects as the good guys and bad guys delightfully smash each other to pieces
The first shot fired in Indian Hindi-language action thriller Kill isn’t unleashed with deadly intent – it’s at a party celebrating the arranged engagement of Tulika (Tanya Maniktala). Unfortunately, Tulika has her heart set on Amrit (played with requisite smoulder by mononymic hunk Lakshya) and why wouldn’t she? He’s a strapping, handsome lad, who, as an army commando, turns out to have fighting skills that will come in pretty handy.
When the violence gets going, after a commendably moderate build up, there’s actually a refreshing lack of gunplay; the 40-odd bandits robbing the sleeper train on which Tulika and Amrit find themselves travelling favour blades and blunt-force trauma over bullets, with an array of knives, machetes and lump hammers pressed...

There are shades of Legally Blonde and Private Benjamin in Amazon’s lesser, low-rent comedy about a Florida bartender with dreams of being an astronaut
There’s a well-tested, and mostly well-liked, formula being recycled in Amazon’s lightweight Fourth of July comedy Space Cadet. It’s the mildly rousing story of an underestimated blonde excelling in a more serious field, something Goldie Hawn aced in Private Benjamin and Protocol before Melanie Griffith took over with Working Girl and Born Yesterday, followed by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. It’s an easy, against-all-odds rise for us to get behind and a career-defining every-scene showcase for an actor who may have also found herself unfairly undervalued by the industry.
There’s something for both actor and character to prove, and when it’s done right, we should be able to taste the same hunger, cheering for an inevitable victory. But in...

The East Texas town of Possum Trot received national notice in 2008 when ABC News, followed by “Oprah” and a slew of television shows that knew a heart-warmer when they saw it, sang the deserved praises of Rev. W.C. Martin and Donna Martin. The couple are the real-life basis of the faith-infused drama “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot,” opening July 4 after a Juneteenth sneak nationwide.

Action thriller begins with glossy vibes, but loses the champagne-fuelled aspirations too soon and wastes co-star Kristin Davis
It’s a sad fact that when you sit down in front of a John Travolta movie nowadays, you know you’re not going to witness a career high point. That moment has been and gone. I refer not to his snake-hipped turn in Grease, or his era-defining strut in Saturday Night Fever, nor even to his funky comeback in Pulp Fiction; no, the greatest moment of Travoltean brilliance will always belong to his top-tier Oscar night flub, inexplicably introducing Idina Menzel as “the wickedly talented Adele Dazeem”. So, allowing for the fact that Cash Out can’t possibly top that, where does it sit in the pantheon? Unfortunately this action thriller, also starring Kristin Davis, is nowhere near that vintage.
This is despite the fact that he plays a very promisingly named antihero called Mason Goddard,...

Talks are currently scheduled up to July 19, less than two weeks before the current contract covering 8,000 members of the Teamsters and several other unions expires on July 31.

Shah has a strong claim to have appeared in more blockbuster movies than anyone else on Earth. He discusses upbraiding Brando, smoking with Christopher Reeve, slanging matches with James Cameron – and a shocking experience at a party with Freddie Mercury
It was 1976 when Kiran Shah saw the advert that would change his life. “It was a sci-fi film looking for a little guy,” he says. Shah turned up at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire and was introduced to a nervous young man named George Lucas. “He said: ‘Can you get in that dustbin thing?’ I was a bit too tall for it but I got in, they put the lid on, and he said: ‘Can you look left, look right?’” Shah didn’t realise he was auditioning for the role of R2-D2 in Star Wars. Universal’s Despicable Me 4 appears set for a $120m North American opening over the long US holiday weekend, providing another boost to the exhibition sector after a disappointing start to the summer box office season.
The Illumination family animation opened on Wednesday (July 3) in more than 4,000 domestic locations on the eve of the July 4 Independence Day holiday. Estimates suggest it will gross $28m on its first day and reach $120m by the end of what is effectively a five-day weekend.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023. It has since been updated with new entries.
To quote Alice Cooper (and poorly paraphrase “High School Musical 2”), school’s out for summer. With Boppenheimer hitting air-conditioned theaters midway through July — just as countless actors and screenwriters head into the heat to join picket-lines in New York and Los Angeles — summer 2023 will no doubt prove a memorable one for Hollywood. What better time then to consider how the movies themselves represent the reason for the season?
The best summer vacation movies range in subject matter and can appeal to all sorts of different audiences. Kid-centric flicks, like “The Parent Trap,” and adult slashers, like the “Friday the 13th” films, explore the traditions and perils of sleep-away camp from spectacularly different view points. Meanwhile, road trip flicks, like the Audrey Hepburn-starring “Two for the Road” and Hindi film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,...

The Teamsters union told its Hollywood members on Wednesday that it expects to hear “fear mongering” from the studios over the next few weeks, in a sign that the two sides remain far apart in negotiations.
The union is bargaining on behalf of about 6,500 truck drivers, animal wranglers and location managers. Their contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is due to expire on July 31.
IATSE, which represents about 65,000 crew members, got a tentative agreement last week, after three months of talks without any outward sign of hostility. But in two updates to the membership, Teamsters Local 399 has made a couple of barbed comments about the studios.
“We expect over the next several weeks to see the companies attempt to use fear mongering tactics against the reasonable terms and conditions our members are fighting for in these negotiations,” the union said Wednesday. “Our members will not...

It’s been 550 days since a new episode of “Yellowstone” aired, which seems absurd for one of the most popular shows on television. But the behind-the-scenes drama since has been as fraught as the dynamics of the Dutton family, leading to the expulsion of the show’s star, Kevin Costner. His departure has been surrounded by a swirl of accusations which largely boil down to Costner demanding less time on set and “Yellowstone” mastermind Taylor Sheridan not wanting to play ball, which led to a schism and Costner’s send-off.
Why was Costner so eager to cut down on his “Yellowstone” commitments? Because he had a wildly ambitious vision for a four-part period Western epic film series named “Horizon,” that he would co-write, direct and star in — and, eventually, partially self-finance. After a mixed debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the first film has debuted nationwide for audiences.

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to so many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, July is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering Wednesday is “Despicable Me 4,” an animated family comedy following super-villain turned super-dad Gru as he raises his newborn son Gru Jr., starring Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin and Joey King. On Friday, the final installment in Ti West’s “X” trilogy “MaXXXine” arrives, a horror mystery following aspiring movie star Maxine Minx whose big break is interrupted when a killer starts hunting down Hollywood starlets, starring Mia Goth, Charley Rowan McCain, Simon Prast, Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Debicki. “Outer Range,” the sci-fi and mystery series led by Josh Brolin, has been canceled by Amazon Studios after two seasons and will not return for a third on Prime Video, an individual with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire.
Brian Watkins created the series that was executive produced by Charles Murray, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Ernest McNealey, Josh Brolin, Tony Krantz, Heather Rae, and Jon Paré. Brolin led the cast that also included Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza, Olive Abercrombie, and Will Patton.

This post contains spoilers for "The Bear" season 3.
In the third episode of "The Bear" season 3, entitled "Doors," there's a moment when the chaos falls away and things get quiet. Writer Christopher Storer and director Duccio Fabbri put the audience into Richie's (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) perspective, and as he's overseeing the front of the restaurant, he becomes hyper-sensitive to the environment around him. Richie notices two things: a fork on the floor, and someone's purse sitting on the floor at a nearby table. Later in the season, we see that he's brought in small benches to serve as purse stools, clearly trying his best to optimize the customer experience. That takes care of the purse situation, but what about that fork?
Obviously Richie has a newfound relationship to forks after the events of the second season, where he staged at Chef Terry's (Olivia Colman) upscale restaurant Ever and was humbled by...

Mercedes Moné, aka Sasha Banks, is one of the most successful professional wrestlers in the world. As is often the case, Hollywood comes calling when one reaches a certain level of success. That's precisely what happened when Moné was still wrestling under the name Sasha Banks for the WWE when Lucasfilm cast her on the live-action "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian." Given that this is one of the biggest, most beloved franchises on the planet, it was a big deal. But the WWE didn't make the gig easy on her. The organization actively tried to get in the way, it seems.
Moné recently spoke with Hot 97 all about her career, including why she left WWE for Aew, aka All Elite Wrestling. She explained that while she still has love for WWE, what happened with her role as Koska Reeves on "The Mandalorian" season 2 was nothing shy of frustrating. Here's what...

Netflix’s “Trigger Warning” is the kind of sturdy thriller that recalls movies from “First Blood” and “Commando” to the early John Cena vehicle “The Marine” and the 2004 remake of “Walking Tall”: a military veteran returns home, looking for peace, only to face violent antagonists who force him back into action.
The difference is that in “Trigger Warning,” the veteran is a woman (Jessica Alba), and the voice behind the camera is female also, as Indonesian director Mouly Surya makes her English-language debut. It’s not just Surya’s first American project after a series of acclaimed films in her home country but also her first action movie. As she told IndieWire, Surya was determined to deliver the traditional satisfactions of the genre while also exploring what it meant to have a woman in a role typically occupied by actors like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and The Rock.

First released in 1984, Martin Brest’s “Beverly Hills Cop” was one of the defining movies of its decade, and a huge stepping stone (along with “48 Hrs.” and “Trading Places”) toward stardom for Eddie Murphy. It not only spawned two sequels over the next decade, but set a template for action comedies that persists today. “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” marks the overdue fourth installment in the franchise and introduces with it a director to watch: Mark Molloy.
After beginning his career as a director of commercials for brands like Nike, Google and Apple, Molloy makes his feature debut with “Axel F,” which drew heavily from the first two “Beverly Hills Cop” films while pushing forward the story of its eponymous detective, now father to an equally-driven but estranged daughter (played by “Zola” breakout Taylour Paige).

This interview contains spoilers for "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F."
It's been thirty years since the atrocious "Beverly Hills Cop III" seemingly killed the franchise for good, and longtime fans of the franchise can breathe a sigh of relief: The bad taste left in our mouths from that movie has finally been washed away. The brand new and long-gestating "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" may not be able to live up to the towering classic status of the first two films, but it's lightyears ahead of the third movie. Murphy feels like he still has a handle on this character and brings him into the modern world while still retaining some of what we love about him. That's a tricky balance to pull off without falling back too many times on the same exact lines we've seen before, and director Mark Molloy was instrumental in helping Murphy strike that balance.

As always, the numbers tell the tale. At the half-year mark, 2024 has been a brutal ride of double-digit stock price declines for traditional media giants with the exception of Disney and Fox Corp. Big Tech and Netflix, on the other hand, have swelled with double-digit gains year to date.
So why aren’t the well-heeled Silicon Valley and Seattle crowd swallowing up vulnerable media companies at long last? That would seem to be the natural order of things for industries that have been inching into each other’s businesses for three decades.
Apple, Meta, Alphabet and most recently Netflix have yet to show any evidence of wanting to buy a hunk of old Hollywood. Amazon dipped a toe in with its purchase of MGM (a relatively contained studio operation and large library without massive overhead commitments) in 2022 but has stayed out of the hunt (so far) for the two biggest targets,...

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s “Kill” wants you to think it’s cheesy. It wants you to forget about its pointedly generic — albeit memorably blunt — directive of a title. It wants you to chuckle when the square-jawed hero (Lakshya) is introduced with a crunchy guitar lick. It wants you to roll your eyes when Nsg commando Amrit Rathod trades meathead barbs with his mustached best friend, Viresh (Abhishek Chauhan), and it wants you to brace for a typically broad action romance when the boys crash an engagement party at a Radisson hotel in Jharkhand, where Amrit’s big-eyed beloved (Tanya Maniktala) is being forced into an arranged marriage by her father.
Following the festivities, Tulika and her business empire of a family board an overnight train to New Delhi to prepare for the wedding. Meanwhile, Amrit and Viresh sneak aboard with every intention of derailing that plan. Amrit may not be rich,...

We are only about three weeks away from the release of Marvel Studios’ only 2024 film— “Deadpool & Wolverine.” As we get closer to the release date, we get a better idea about how much money the film is set to make. And three weeks out, it’s still looking like Marvel has a huge hit on its hands. However, not as big as what people expected a couple weeks ago.

The yellow Minionese-speaking Minions are back and Maxime Le Mal is the newest villain to cause mayhem in Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4,” directed by Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage. Will Ferrell voices the French supervillain who escapes from prison, which leads Gru (Steve Carell) and his family Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes and a new addition, Gru Jr., to go on the run.
“[Chris and I] have been trying to work together for a long time. [“Despicable Me 4″] was an opportunity where I was pitched the character of being the villain, this French bad guy, Maxime, and that’s all I needed to hear was ‘French’ and ‘bad guy,'” Ferrell told Variety at the film’s New York premiere in June.
“I’m being typecast now,” Ferrell jokingly said about playing Maxime following his role as the Mattel CEO villain in last year’s “Barbie.” “It’s always fun to be mean, in a silly way.

Jake Paltrow’s latest film, “June Zero,” breaks itself into three distinctive points of view. The film follows the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the mass extermination of Jews during World War II. Rather than focusing on Eichmann himself, the film revolves around those whose lives were touched by the trial and his crimes.

AI turns deadly in the trailer for Sony’s “Afraid,” a new Blumhouse horror movie starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston.
Per the sci-fi horror movie’s logline: “Curtis (Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called Aia. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, Aia seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way.”
The trailer sees Curtis and his family navigate their new AI assistant. At first, she seems to do everything and more, from ordering food to reading stories to the kids, helping out with chores and taking care of the bills for the parents. But things start to...

When it was announced that Cate Blanchett was going to star in the film adaptation of the video game “Borderlands,” some film fans were scratching their head in confusion. Of course, it wasn’t completely shocking, as she was reteaming with filmmaker Eli Roth, but it was difficult to imagine Blanchett taking on such a role. However, according to the actor, that’s exactly why she took it.

“Xoftex” is a name you might expect to find on a pharmacy shelf, to be taken only after consultation with your physician. In Noaz Deshe’s heady second feature, however, the title refers to an imagined refugee camp in Greece: a vast, purgatorial compound that has as numbing and disorienting an effect on its residents as the strongest prescription medication. Following a pair of Syrian brothers as they wait out the agonizing process of asylum application — passing the time by bickering, fantasizing about a better life in northern Europe, and shooting amateur movies — Deshe’s film strikingly captures a sense of passing time and personal stasis battling each other to a fraught draw, building to a freeform surrealism that gives “Xoftex” its own identity amid the recent wave of cinema centered on the migrant crisis.

Ok, the 2024 box office has been a bit dire this year, but “Inside Out 2,” which crossed $1 billion worldwide in about two weeks, is giving the industry some hope. Also, “Bad Boys: Ride Or Die” and “A Quiet Place: Day One” have posted strong numbers so far, so maybe summer is finally taking off a little later than its usual theatrical start in May.

American screenwriter and director best known for the hit films Chinatown, The Last Detail and Shampoo
Robert Towne, who has died aged 89, wrote a dazzling hat-trick of screenplays that helped define the great American cinema of the 1970s: The Last Detail (1973), Chinatown (1974) and Shampoo (1975). He also did extravagantly paid work as a script doctor, adding a scene or a few pages of dialogue to other writers’ screenplays, or completing what is known in the industry as a “polish”.
If a script was flawed or lacking, directors and studios went to Towne. “You must adopt the first precept of Hippocrates, which is to do no harm,” he said about this sideline. “You try to extend the material, not to impose yourself on it.” Sometimes, as with The Godfather (1971), he could provide a pick-me-up to a patient that was already fighting fit. In other cases, such as Armageddon (1998), he could do little...

This article contains spoilers for "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F."
Actors almost never become movie stars overnight. Even the born-to-dazzle likes of Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and Paul Newman needed a bit of runway to soar to that rarified Hollywood air. Eddie Murphy, however, needed just one moment in his first movie to become a generational showbiz phenomenon.
That moment arrived 38 minutes into Walter Hill's 1982 action-comedy hit "48 Hrs.," when Murphy's furloughed criminal Reggie Hammond convinces Nick Nolte's Detective Jack Cates to let him shakedown a redneck bar's racist patrons for information on the whereabouts of a cop killer. Reggie, tired of Cates insistence that it takes "bullls*** and experience" to successfully interrogate suspects, invites the officer to "Come on in and experience some of my bulls***." Armed with nothing but Cates' shield and his mouth, Reggie bullies cows a saloon full of hostile white folks into terrified silence.

One of the highest-grossing animated productions of all time, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has already reached a key milestone: $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
A substantial chunk of that impressive total came from Spanish-speaking Latin America, where the film is known as “IntensaMente 2.” The title used in those countries literally means “Intensely,” but it’s also a play on the words “Intense” and “Mind.” Meanwhile, the name in Spain, “Del Revés,” is a less ingenious, verbatim translation of “Inside Out.” Dubs and titles for most movies, and definitely for Disney films, differ in Spain and Latin America.
In Mexico, a country with a long-standing movie-going culture, “Inside Out 2” has already amassed a whopping $81.8 million (around 1.5 billion pesos), surpassing “Avengers: Endgame.” The animated sequel is now the second most profitable film of all time in Mexico, only behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($85.3 million). Meanwhile, Mexico’s...

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is primed to tear into the summer box office.
The Disney and Marvel sequel, which unites Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth with Hugh Jackman’s grumpy mutant, is on track to open to between $160 million to $165 million when it releases in three weeks. Of course, those numbers come with some caveats (and plenty of upside). It’s worth noting that this tracking is hitting before the bulk of the studio’s marketing materials inundate moviegoers, so interest in the film could keep building. It’s also hard to accurately project ticket sales this far in advance of a film’s debut, but these initial figures show how intensely fanboys and fangirls are anticipating this buddy act.
If the film does open to this level, it will mark the best launch of 2024 as well as the best-ever bow for an R-rated film. It also comes after Marvel,...

Cate Blanchett is well-aware that her starring in video-game adaptation “Borderlands” is more than a little unexpected.
The Oscar winner told Empire that leading Eli Roth’s action film was a way to escape her “Covid madness” of quarantine at the time.
“The crazy asks are usually the things I gravitate towards; the things I could never conceive of,” Blanchett said. “I think there also may have been a little Covid madness — I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life.'”
Blanchett prepared just as seriously for her role as Lillith, the leader of a ragtag group of space mercenaries, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, Arianna Greenblatt, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, as she has for any role. Blanchett turned into a gamer just for the fully-meta experience of “Borderlands.”

Look, there’s no denying that true artificial intelligence is a somewhat scary thought. We’re talking about things that are a step ahead of what we see now as A.I. Not the apps that can create pictures from text prompts. But true, A.I. that can actually think and act as almost a human would. So, as long as we have that base fear of A.I., films like “Afraid” will be made.

There may have technically been fewer wide releases over the past six months of 2024 than the first six months of 2023, but despite lesser volume, there has been a bounty of good movies on the big screen. Some of them took a while to get to theaters following their festival premieres, while others can only be classified as studio “surprises”, and, thankfully, more than one lived up to the pre-release hype.

He was mentored by Jacques Derrida, and his memoir about taking hormones broke new ground. Now, Preciado’s radical cinematic riff on Virginia Woolf’s novel explores a life spent defying the gender binary
In the opening seconds of Orlando: My Political Biography, a shadowy figure in a quiet city street says: “Someone once asked me, ‘Why don’t you write your autobiography?’ And I replied, ‘Because Virginia Woolf fucking wrote it for me in 1928.’” The scene takes place in the dead of night, with the silence broken only by the swish of a brush as this speaker pastes up a large gold poster. “Orlando,” it reads, “où es tu?”
Moments later, this fly-poster apologises to Woolf for his profanity: “I say it with tenderness and admiration, because your writing seems impossible to surpass. But I also say it with rage, because you represented us – trans people – as aristocrats in...

It’s interesting to see how different Hollywood figures react to being famous. There are folks like Daniel Day-Lewis, who would regularly go back to his normal life between gigs. You have Terrence Malick who doesn’t even really do interviews at all. But then on the extreme other side, apparently, is someone like Kevin Bacon.
Speaking in a Vanity Fair interview, Kevin Bacon talked about the fact he has two new movies being released close together— “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “MaXXXine.” But he also talked about a social experiment he conducted where he put on a disguise and walked around as a regular person for a day.

Alec Baldwin Wanted to Ride a Horse, but ‘Rust’ Safety Adviser Said No: ‘There Was a Bit of Yelling’
![Image](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNmFmZDE5MTctMDljNC00MTcyLTk1MmQtMDVhZWZmN2FlOGRhXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTE0MzQwMjgz._V1_QL75_UY281_CR0,0,500,281_.jpg)
“Rust” resumed filming in Montana, 18 months after Alec Baldwin accidentally shot the film’s cinematographer while preparing for a scene at a New Mexico ranch.
Naturally, the producers were focused on safety, forbidding the use of any functional firearms on set, and hiring two veteran safety officers to oversee the completion of filming.
Now one of those officers — Paul Jordan — is set to testify against Baldwin at his upcoming manslaughter trial in Santa Fe, saying that the actor resisted advice not to ride a horse at full gallop.
“There was a little bit of yelling at times, insisting he could do certain things that everyone else felt he couldn’t do,” Jordan testified in a pre-trial interview.
Prosecutors want to use Jordan’s testimony to help establish a pattern of recklessness. They have argued that the accidental shooting was just one of several instances on set in which Baldwin was careless with safety.
